Volkswagen Bulli (2011) at 2011 Geneva motor show

This is the new VW Bulli, a small electric MPV unveiled on the eve of the 2011 Geneva motor show. 'Bulli' was the German name for the 1950's T1, what the US market called the Microbus, and the new Bulli concept is an evolution of the lovely Microbus concept revealed in 2001. The new concept is smaller than Microbus concept and has an EV powerplant.

So what’s is the VW Bulli all about?

It’s an sub-Meriva MPV – it's nearly 300mm shorter than the little Vauxhall people carrier. VW design supremo Walter de Silva told CAR the Bulli is related to the Up family. 'It's wider though and 4m long. There is an intention to launch something like this in the B-MPV segment.' In the metal the VW Bulli has the air of a production car waiting to be green-lighted: seals, switchgear, door hinges are all ready to go and the minders didn't mind us clambering all over it. When the Bulli is launched it’ll be VW’s fifth MPV, and sit alongside the Caddy, Touran, Sharan and Caravelle.
The design is clean, crisp and minimalist, and once again moves VW’s new look another step forward. Cool details abound. The VW badge on the snout is a good 12in tall and the two-tone paint is striking. The interior is clever too, with a sandwich floor construction hiding the battery pack and giving a flat floor – don't expect a leather floor in production however. There's Fiat Multipla-style three-abreast seating, with a bench up front and 60:40 folding rear seats, a panoramic glass roof, and all the infotainment is controlled via an iPad, with a separate for the gear selector.

What’s the technology under the skin?

The VW Bulli concept is a front-wheel drive EV, with an 85kW electric motor able to produce 199lb ft, and a lithium-ion battery pack with a 40kWh storage capacity. VW reckons this is enough fro a 186-mile zero-emissions range, 0-62mph in 11.5 seconds and a 88mph (limited) top speed. With a ‘quick charge’ system, replenishing the batteries will take under an hour, too. Range not big enough? VW admits a 1.0 or 1.4-litre engine from its current range will easily fit in the Bulli.

2011 Lincoln MKX — First Drive

It is no secret
that Lincoln has some serious ground to cover if it wants to be
a luxury nameplate capable of going toe-to-toe
with the likes of Audi, Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz, particularly in the brutally competitive luxury-crossover segment. If what we've seen in
the 2011 MKX is any indication, though, Lincoln is
hell-bent on putting up a fight.

Model LineupUnlike
its not-so-distant cousin, the 2011 Ford Edge, the Lincoln MKX is available in only
two configurations: front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Both variants come with an
impressive array of standard features, including leather seating surfaces and a
heated steering wheel. The front seats are heated, cooled and power-adjustable —
traits that will cost you extra on competitors like the Lexus RX 350.

Bing: Lincoln
Luxury

In its ongoing quest to separate itself
from the rest of the luxury crowd, Lincoln has taken to packing its interiors
with technology, even in base trim. All MKX trims come from the factory with
Sync voice command, and for 2011, the company is introducing MyLincoln Touch.
The system adds a new level of functionality to the vehicle's massive 8-inch LCD
touch-screen by placing two additional, smaller LCD screens on either side of
the speedometer, operated by two 5-way controls on the steering wheel. The driver
can pull up everything from fuel economy to information on navigation or climate
control without having to look down and away from the road. We love it.

The MKX comes with painted 18-inch wheels
as standard equipment; 18-inch and 20-inch polished aluminum wheels are
optional, as are 20-inch chrome-clad wheels.

Under
the Hood
Within a year, the 2011 Ford Edge will be
available with three engines, including one very fuel-efficient turbocharged
4-cylinder; its luxury counterpart, the Lincoln MKX, is available only with the
most powerful of those options. The 3.7-liter V6 engine produces 305 horsepower
and 280 lb-ft of torque, which can hardly be called undesirable. It makes 40
more horsepower than the 3.5-liter V6 in the 2010 model, while returning an
additional estimated 1 mpg highway.

The EPA hasn't
released its fuel-economy findings on the 2011 MKX, but Ford is aiming for 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway in
front-wheel-drive guise. Adding the heavy all-wheel-drive system is expected to
cause those numbers to fall to 17/23. Behind the more powerful 6-cylinder engine
is the same 6-speed automatic transmission that showed up in the 2010 model,
though we think Lincoln has made some progress with the vehicle's shift logic.
Gear changes are very smooth compared with the outgoing MKX.
